1768 - 1872  -  Joseph Haydn writes a series of symphonies in minor keys that have a "stormy"
                        feel to them.  They can be considered forerunners of romanticism 
                        (proto-romanticism).  Somewhat later, a small number of Mozart's works have 
                        a simlar feel. 

1805   -   Ludwig van Beethoven premiers his Symphony No. 3, "Eroica" 

1809   -   Felix Mendelssohn is born on February 3rd.

           -   Joseph Haydn dies on May 31st at age 76.  

1810   -   Frédéric Chopin is born on March 1st.

           -   Robert Schumann is born on June 10th.

1811   -   Franz Liszt is born on October 22nd. 

1819   -   Clara Weick is born on Sept 13th.

1827   -   Ludwig van Beethoven dies on March 26th at age 56.

1828   -   Franz Schubert dies on November 19th age 31.  Schumann first hears his music about this time.

           -   Robert, 18, begins lessons with Frierich Wieck;  Clara is 9.

1830   -   The premier of Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique in Paris in December.

           -   Robert publishes his Opus 1, Variations on the name "Abegg".

1831   -   Robert contracts syphilis from a girlfriend.  

1732   -   Robert's  Toccata in C major, Op. 7 increases his fame

1833   -   Johannes Brahms is born on May 7th.

           -   Panic attacks; first indications Robert has a mental illness???

 1834   -  Robert founds the music magazine Neue Zeitschrift für Musik

 1834 - 1835  -  Robert has a relationship with 17 year old Ernestine von Fricken.  

 1835  -  Clara, 15, premiers her Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 7 with Felix Mendelssohn conducting.

 1840   -   Robert begins composing vocal, chamber and orchestra music.

           -   Robert and Clara marry on September 12th.

1841   -   Marie, the first of eight Schumann children, is born.

1843   -   The premier of Schumann's secular oratorio Das Paradies und die Peri 
                makes him internationally famous.

1844   -   The Schumanns first hear 14 year old violinist Joseph Joachim play.  Later, 
                Joachim will play over 238 concerts with Clara in Germany and England. 

1847   -   Felix Mendelssohn dies November 4th, age 37.

1849   -   Frédéric Chopin dies October 27th, age 39. 

1853   -   Johannes Brahms, 20, visits the Schumanns' home on Sept. 30th impressing them.

1854   -   Robert attempts suicide on February 27th and enters a mental facility.

1855   -   Clara, 36, composes her last piece of music.

1856   -   Robert Schumann dies on July 9th, age 46.

1874   -   Clara does a concert tour in the United States.

1878   -   Clara is appointed teacher of the piano at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt
                a post she held until 1892.

1896   -   Clara Schumann dies on May 20th, age 76.

1897   -   Johannes Brahms dies on April 3rd, age 63.
